The Town of Potter was founded on April 26, 1832, after separating from the Town of Middlesex. Before its establishment, the area was part of the District of Augusta. Initially called "Potter's Town," the 42,430-acre area was purchased by Arnold Potter, son of Judge William Potter. In December 1856, the town expanded by an additional 1.5 square miles from Middlesex, and today, Potter spans 34.5 square miles.
Early settlers included notable figures such as Rowes Perry, the Brown family, Elias Gilbert, and others who played pivotal roles in the town’s development. The area’s first mills and distilleries were established by entrepreneurs like Griffin, Riggs, and Luke Conley in the early 1800s. Additionally, important sites such as the Warfield Neighborhood, founded by Lindsey Warfield in 1798, contributed to the region's growth.
Dr. Frederic Dutch, a German Lutheran, settled in the area around 1800 and helped form the German Lutheran Church at Voak. Other early settlements, like Moontown and Hoardtown, were populated by families like the Moon and Hoard families.
Potter’s industrial history includes the establishment of several mills, including sawmills and gristmills operated by figures like Sanford Strobridge and Arnold Potter. The Strobridge family also contributed to the town’s development, with members involved in various industries, including wagon making and grape cultivation.
By the mid-1800s, the town’s economy was thriving with the operation of taverns, stores, and businesses in Potter Center. The first post office was established in 1835, with Richard M. Williams serving as the first postmaster. The town also had Methodist and Baptist churches, blacksmith shops, and schools.
Today, sites like the James Hobart House, Arnold Potter House, Yatesville Methodist Church, and Roundstone Schoolhouse are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
